Lab results indicated a low white blood cell count, confirming an infection, but the exact diagnosis remained elusive. The case was complicated by the fact that Tamala sought medical attention after the crucial 72-hour window following the tick bite.
After days of uncertainty, the Wilson family received a devastating diagnosis – Tamala was suffering from hemophagocytic lymphosteocytosis (HLH), a severe inflammatory syndrome transmitted by ticks.
