During a news conference, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said that the woman who was detained and charged in connection with the case of a baby who was discovered in Georgia four years ago wrapped in a plastic bag.
Karima Jiwani, who is 40 years old, was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with a variety of offenses, including criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, willful abandonment, and cruelty to minors in the first degree, according to the police.
On June 6, 2019, according to police allegations, Jiwani abandoned “Baby India” in a forested location. The man who discovered the infant wailing and drenched in blood informed rescue personnel that he heard the baby crying from his home. The father also found the kid with the umbilical chord still attached to it when he found it.
“Four years ago, I said in this room, and I told you, we will bring this person to justice,” Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman stated at the beginning of the news conference on Friday. “I had no idea that it was going to take four years,” said the speaker.
According to Freeman, the detectives made a significant advancement in their investigation ten months ago when they employed “advanced DNA practices” to determine the identity of Baby India’s biological father. He stated that once that stage was completed, they next sought to determine how, why, and who was responsible for abandoning the infant in the woods. He also stated that once that step was completed, they found the youngster.
He stated that the evidence uncovered showed that Jiwani drove for a “significant amount of time” after baby India was born in her automobile, and that this was supported by the fact that she did so for some time after giving birth. He stated that the new mother had “not made any effort to leave this child” in a “place where this child could have been found.”
He stated that interviews with Jiwani’s relatives and friends found that she had reportedly had a “history of hidden and concealed pregnancies and surprise births,” and that she had allegedly “known about the pregnancy for a considerable period of time” and “went to extremes to conceal this pregnancy.”
A California family murder suspect is accused of leaving a baby to die of exposure, and he had a history of conflict with the baby’s parents.
He went on to say that detectives had come up empty-handed in their search for proof that the child’s biological father “was aware of either the pregnancy or the abandonment of [the] baby.”
This youngster was reportedly placed in the woods like a sack of trash after being bound up in a plastic bag and stowed inside. Freeman stated, “I am at a loss for words regarding that.” It is, quite simply, one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever witnessed.
On the other hand, he praised the community of Forsyth County for banding together in order to assist the youngster.
“When a biological parent refused to do what they were supposed to do, Forsyth County surrounded this little girl with love, care, and prayers and lifted her up the way it’s supposed to be,” said the sheriff of Forsyth County.
Freeman did not provide any updates on the current state of Baby India; however, he did remark that she is now “happy, healthy, and in a safe place.”
