Russia protests against the US military’s “provocative operations” in Syria

According to the Tass news agency on Friday, Russia has complained to the US-led coalition fighting ISIS over “provocative activities” by US military forces in Syria.

The incidents took place in the Hasakeh province in the northeast, according to a senior Russian official quoted by Tass. To confront ISIS, the US has been stationing soldiers in Syria for almost eight years.

In remote locations where neither the coalition nor the Syrian army has complete control, hundreds of ISIS members are camped. Russia and Turkey, who are patrolling jointly in northern Syria, have agreed on specific areas where the coalition may operate.Nevertheless, the head of the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria, Russian Rear Admiral Oleg Gurinov, told Tass that US personnel had twice been detected in locations that were outside the predetermined zones.

He said, without providing a timeframe, “Provocative acts on the part of US armed forces units have been detected in Hasakeh province… the Russian side submitted a protest with the coalition.”

The US military launched many airstrikes in Syria last week targeting organizations supported by Iran, whom it accused of being responsible for a drone attack that claimed the life of an American contractor at a coalition facility in the northeast of the nationRussia intervened in the Syrian Civil War in 2015, tipping the balance in President Bashar Al-Assad’s favor.

Moscow has since expanded its military facilities in the country with a permanent air base and also has a naval base.
