Squirrel-Sourced Car Trouble: Vehicle Owners Urged to Check Under the Hood After Unusual Find

In a startling series of events, vehicle owner Mark Anderson discovered an unusual and potentially hazardous issue with his truck after a towing incident revealed a surprising stash of walnuts and grass under the hood. Anderson, who had recently experienced engine trouble with his truck, was alerted to the problem after his wife reported similar issues with her car.

The trouble began when Anderson’s wife, Holly, noticed a burning smell and unusual sounds emanating from her vehicle while at Northland Library. Upon investigating, Anderson instructed her to pop the hood, only to discover a troubling sight in a picture she sent: the engine compartment was packed with over 200 walnuts and substantial amounts of grass.

This discovery was particularly alarming given that Anderson’s truck had recently been towed after experiencing significant shaking while accelerating and a check engine light coming on. After the truck was towed to Shorkey on McKnight, Anderson took the opportunity to address the issue. He rented a vehicle and spent nearly an hour cleaning out the debris from under the hood. The extensive accumulation of walnuts and grass was suspected to have contributed to the engine problems.

The investigation revealed that a squirrel might have chewed through or pulled out a fuel injector hose, exacerbating the vehicle’s issues. The situation highlights a growing concern for vehicle owners who park outside, as critters can cause significant damage by nesting or storing food in engine compartments.

Anderson’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and inspection, especially if parking outside. “If you park outside, do yourself a favor and check under the hood every once in a while,” Anderson advised, reflecting on the unexpected challenge he faced.

The case underscores the need for vehicle owners to be vigilant and proactive in maintaining their vehicles to prevent similar issues. Anderson’s ordeal has drawn attention to a lesser-known but crucial aspect of vehicle care, encouraging others to take precautionary measures to avoid potential damage and ensure their vehicles remain in optimal condition.
