After the British royal family stopped funding his expenses due to his resignation from official membership, Prince Harry lived on the estate of his mother, Princess Diana of Wales. According to what he told Oprah Winfrey in her controversial interview, that was how he managed to pay for his life in California.
“I have what my mother left me. Without that we would not have been able to do this, ”said the Duke of Sussex, referring to the move to the United States that he and his wife, Meghan Markle, made last year with his son Archie. “It’s as if [Diana] had seen what she was about to come and had accompanied us throughout this entire process.”
Died in 1997 in a tragic accident in Paris, Princess Diana left an inheritance of just over 21 million pounds -today about 25 million euros- to be divided equally between her two children, Prince William and Prince Harry.
As reported by the BBC in 1998, that amount remained in a net worth of 12,966,022 pounds after payment of the corresponding taxes. In addition, a clause added by Diana to her will, originally made in 1993, left a bequest of £50,000 to her butler, Paul Burrell, while the princess’s 17 godchildren were given a gift to choose from “a quarter of her personal possessions ” by the executors of the will: Frances Shand Kydd, mother of Diana of Wales, one of her sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and Richard Chartres, the Bishop of London.
Princes William and Harry were 15 and 12 years old when they became orphans. His mothers well-established establish that they could not freely dispose of the inheritance until they were 25 years old, but later a court raised that age to 30 years. In Harry’s case, that moment came in September 2014.
According to the British press, the inheritance received by Diana’s two children was invested by the financial advisers of the British royal house up to 20 million pounds once the brothers were able to dispose of it, so Harry would have inherited an estate worth 10 million.
Not all of this heritage consists of cash: the inheritance is also made up of Princess Diana’s jewels such as the diamond bracelet that, without going any further, we saw the Duchess of Sussex wear in the interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Princess Diana’s estate, on the other hand, isn’t the only one Harry has been a beneficiary of. Although he did not mention it last Sunday, Harry also received about 14 million pounds from the inheritance of his great-grandmother, the Queen Mother, to be divided equally with her brother William of hers.
